Smart buys

A lot of the time when I post a video, I’m never quite sure how it will be received. That was definitely true of my recent ‘saving vs splurging’ video. I worried people either wouldn’t find it interesting or would tell me I was silly for spending so much on a handbag, but my worries were unjustified and the video sparked some great discussion in the comments.

In the picture above I’m wearing two expensive items (a Michael Kors handbag and Karen Walker ring), and two incredibly cheap ones ( a Glassons cardigan and H&M shirt). As I mentioned in the video, I think the key to splurging on items is to make sure they’re classic pieces that you love, and that work well in the rest of your wardrobe.

Many of my viewers agreed that shoes were always worth spending a bit more on, with a few saying watching this video made them feel a bit better about a recent pricey purchase they’d made…

One thing I didn’t mention in my video that lots of people have said they splurge on in the comments, is a good winter coat. When I thought about it, I realised that I invested a few hundred dollars into a nice wool coat around 4 or 5 years ago and it lasted me well for so long that I forgot how much it cost me! It’s showing a bit of wear now though so next winter I’ll probably be making another investment.

Another thing that a few people said they splurge on is good quality basics. I’m in two minds on this one. I can see the value in it, but at the same time I’d find it hard to part with a lot of cash for a plain shirt! I might be coming around to agree on this one though after watching Victoria’s staple items video where she shows some ‘plain’ items that are actually gorgeous and quite interesting. So perhaps I’ll keep my eyes open for higher quality basics in the future.

I’d love to know what you think is worth splurging on, and which items you prefer to pick up cheaply? Let me know in the comments and make sure you check out the video for more on what I like to save and splurge on.
